Governing: through the eyes of

Onze publicaties EHdK – Doebureau Amsterdam

How do you bring a vision to life and give direction to an organization with a healthcare mission? Welcome to the new EHdK video series: ‘Steering through the eyes of‘. In the video series several directors in the healthcare sector in the Netherlands are interviewed who all tell about their most important insights and lessons as a director.

In each video, we engage them in a conversation about the role they have had as directors in significant changes and innovations in the organization. What behaviors, actions, or leadership styles have contributed and what works and what doesn’t work. An open and transparent conversation in which directors have the opportunity to share their most important lessons and insights about themselves as directors.

Gerco Blok kicks off the discussion. He is a psychiatrist and member of the board of Emergis, an organization for mental health and well-being in the Zeeland region. He faces an exciting challenge: various models predict a shortage of 7,500 employees in Zeeland by 2030. He has made it a personal mission to future-proof mental health care in the region. How he does that and how he approaches it in his organization, he explains in this video.

In this episode, Mariënne Verhoef, director at youth care organization Levvel, talks about how they are working together in the supra-regional expertise network Youth North Holland to bring about the project “Thuis voor Noordje. This is a supra-regional plan in which youths in North Holland, with complex assistance requests with intensive treatment and accommodation needs, are helped as much as possible at home. Mariënne talks about the cooperation between the various parties in the region and names the important factors that she believes lead to successful cooperation, within Levvel and beyond.

Audrey van Schaik, director at GGZ Rivierduinen, in addition to a background in psychiatry, has also gained experience as a director in the Nursing, Care Homes and Home Care (VVT) sector. In this episode, she talks about how mental health care in the Netherlands can be inspired by elderly care and what good examples she sees around her regarding community-based care. Audrey advocates for society to move closer to people with psychiatric problems: “think about what you can do as a citizen or neighbor.”
