Commitment to family care is necessary

In 2023, we will push even harder for family care. After all, the cause of many youth problems lies not with the children but with their parents, writes EHdK colleague Jenneke in her article in the NRC.

Commitment to family care is necessary because children’s behavioral problems usually stem from parental problems. Research on 46 children living in a youth care facility shows that 72 percent of them have parental problems. Parents struggle with debts, psychological problems or addiction. As a result, they cannot always properly care for their children. Now, too often symptom treatment is done, so the children do not get the right help.

Therefore, let us not focus on the children’s problems, but above all let us offer help to the parents. After all, that is often where the cause of the problems within the family lies.
